What a chip says about how we still view women

February 6, 2018 by Annemarie Shrouder Leave a Comment

PepsiCo wants to launch a Lady Doritos chip.
No, it’s not pink… But I think it says a LOT about how women are still viewed in society.

a bag of chips

Take a look:
It’s going to be a bag that is smaller (to fit in a purse), less messy, and…wait for it….quieter! Not as crunchy – but they have promised to keep the same great taste.

WTF!?
I have to say it.

How in the world, in 2018, are we even having a conversation or entertaining the idea that women can’t / don’t enjoy chips that are messy, that we all carry a purse and that – this is the worst part – we want to be quieter.

This, to me, speaks loudly of what society continues to think about women, and expect from women.
If you’re too big (literally or figuratively) you’re not ‘the real thing’.
If you’re too messy, you’re not ‘the real thing’.
And heaven forbid if you are too loud!!!

Wow. And wow.

The subtext (if you need it spelled out): women should be small (in stature, as well as body size), neat and clean, and quiet.

I don’t even know what to say.

And I know some of you reading this will think – ‘get over it, it’s just a bag of chips.’
Exactly! It’s a BAG OF CHIPS!
How preposterous to think we need a special bag!

Thank you, PepsiCo for showing us so exquisitely how the female gender is still viewed.

I would laugh if I wasn’t so angry.

PS – Here’s a Toronto Star article about it. Make sure you scroll down to the end and catch some of the tweets they have included.
